Karen Barr is the publisher, editor and founder of Raising Arizona Kids, a monthly magazine for families in the greater-Phoenix area, and the mother of two grown sons, Andy and David.
She got her start in journalism as the sports editor for her high school newspaper (Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana), then went on to write for the University of Arizona Wildcat before transfering to the University of Guam, where she resurrected the then-defunct Triton’s Call student newspaper and made contacts that led to her first paid reporter position at the Pacific Daily News in Agana, Guam.
She returned to Arizona in 1981 and took a position as a reporter, then bureau chief, for the Arizona Republic. While there, she met and married fellow reporter Dan Barr.
In 1982, she accompanied Dan to Cleveland, Ohio, where he earned a law degree and she earned a masters degree in business administration at Case Western Reserve University. Eight months pregnant, she returned with Dan to Phoenix just before the birth of their son Andrew in July 1985. Son David followed in July 1987. After three years as a stay-at-home mom, she returned to journalism, on her own terms, by starting Raising Arizona Kids.
